The Mets have had their fair share of embarrassments in 2010, and the main culprits are back at it again.

Professional-smiler-turned-benchwarmer Jeff Francoeur and the second baseman who is currently dead last among NL starters at the position in batting average, OPS, extra base hits, and total bases, Luis Castillo, are chatting it up to the New York media about how they deserve to be treated like starting players.

After his walk-off hit Tuesday night, Castillo was visibly bitter with his teammates and manager Jerry Manuel, as he refused to even crack a smile as his team mobbed him in excitement after a win against the Marlins.

"I thought I would be playing tonight but I am not making the lineup. What is going on here? I don't know what he's doing," Castillo told the Daily News prior to Wednesday's game against Florida.

The aging second baseman, a mere shell of his former self, is standing firm in his position of wanting out of New York. "I think we will talk to them about that," Castillo said. "I need to be in a different kind of situation. I don't know what they want to do. I want an opportunity to play, and if it is here, then I am happy. If it is somewhere else, then that's what it is."

It's become obvious that Castillo views himself in a much higher regard than the manager, the entire organization, and the fanbase. As he continues to handcuff the club by simply being on the roster, rookie Ruben Tejada is the one suffering.

At 20 years of age, Tejada clearly isn't ready to face major league pitching. His defense has been stellar, however, and his so called, "rookie mistakes" have been minimal. With time and development, Tejada can very well be the future at the position for the Mets (don't tell that to Reese Havens), but frankly it's too early for Tejada to be an everyday player. But don't blame him or the team, blame Castillo.

In much the same situation as Castillo, outcast rightfielder Jeff Francoeur has also asked to be a starter, or traded.

“We want to play every day,” Francoeur's agent told the Newark Star-Ledger earlier this month. She continued, “We prefer to play in New York. But if we’re not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else.”

Francoeur, who has mesmerized fans with his million dollar smile, rifle throwing arm, and spirited grit, is currently second to last in the MLB in batting average and slugging percentage, last in on base percentage and OPS (on base % + slugging %). In addition, no right fielder in the league has played as many games and has fewer total bases or extra base hits then Frenchy.

But through all of this, Francoeur, and some blinded fans, seem convinced that he is the future of the Mets.

This offseason, however, should bring new homes to both Francoeur and Castillo, and in doing so, they'll finally let the young talent and the entire organization function as it's meant to.

Alone on an Island

The New York Jets and their fans enjoyed an improbable run through the postseason last year. Their defense is what made it possible, as they stifled some of the league's best offenses. In the process, NFL fans everywhere took notice of a certain cornerback - Darelle Revis.

Revis, the Jets first round draft choice in 2007, had a solid first few seasons. However, Revis brought it to a whole new level in 2009 under first-year head coach Rex Ryan. Week after week, Revis would frustrate opposing wideouts and shut them down. He held players such as Andre Johnson, Randy Moss (twice), Chad Ochocinco, and Steve Smith of the Panthers to performances under 35 yards during the regular season.

2009 was Darelle's coming out party, and he only continued his dominance in the postseason. He shut down Chad Ochocinco for a second consecutive week in the AFC Wild Card round in Cincinatti, and treated Vincent Jackson to the same fate in the Divisional Round in San Diego. Even in the AFC Championship Game, where the Jets failed, Revis allowed the great Peyton Manning only two completions when throwing his way. Last season prompted the new phrase, "Revis Island", where no receiver comes out alive. Darelle Revis was quickly becoming the best cornerback in the NFL, and was only getting better

Fast forward to training camp 2010. When camp opened at SUNY Cortland in late July, Rex Ryan was chomping at the bit. And why not? Offseason acquisitions such as Ladainian Tomlinson, and Antonio Cromartie were ready to go. HBO's cameras were there ready to film their hit miniseries "Hard Knocks" featuring the Jets. Only one thing was missing from Gang Green - their best player.

Darelle Revis failed to report to camp due to a contract dispute with the organization. Darelle played like the best player in the league last year, and he knew it. Now, he wants to get paid like it.

The holdout of Revis continues to be the biggest story out of Jets camp at Cortland. In the most recent public report regarding figures, the two sides (GM Mike Tannenbaum and Darelle Revis and his agent) were a whopping $40 million dollars apart. Darelle's goal is to be paid more than anyone else who plays his position, because he, along with everyone else, knows he is the best in the business.

So now, three weeks away from the start of the season, Darelle is yet to show up. The Jets and their fans are now forced to face the reality of life without Revis. While Revis certainly makes them a better team, the defense is still one of the league's best, if not the best. What is more troubling to the Jets and their fans is Darelle's attitude. Jets fans, myself included, would like to think that every player is 100% committed to making a return trip to the playoffs and take home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in over 40 years. However, Darelle is making it apparent that the green he cares most about is what he keeps in his wallet, not what he wears on Sundays. So worry not, All-Pro receivers. It's looking more and more like Revis Island is a place nobody will have to visit in 2010.

Missing: Mets Offense

Those are the scoreless innings streaks the Mets offense painfully slumped through during their most recent West coast roadie. They finished up the trip 2-9, scoring a grand total of 23 runs over the 11 games.

After falling to the Dodgers Thursday, New York has matched its low-water mark of 2010, standing 7.5 games behind first-place Atlanta. The loss was quite possibly the final straw for General Manager Omar Minaya, who wasn't at all reassuring of his current coaching staff.

When asked specifically if Mets coaches would be returning with identical roles when the team returns home this Tuesday, Minaya responded, "I don't want to talk about that. I feel everybody here is trying hard. I could tell you the staff is trying hard. If you ask me [about] the overall performance that has happened, of course I'm not happy. Nobody is happy."

When a reporter took another hack at prying a quote from the tight-lipped Minaya, the GM responded, "That's all I'm going to say."

A move that can be heavily anticipated is the firing of batting coach Howard Johnson, who can easily be called out as a scapegoat in this offensive dry-spell. But Minaya should not stop there.

A complete overhaul of the coaching staff is needed for the Mets to contend in 2010.

Along with the lack of hitting, the Mets have been victims of hideous starting lineups and putrid in-game managing.

Let's take a look at his ever-so-carefully-pieced-together batting orders before we pick apart his strategic abilities.

In today's loss in Los Angeles, the lineup card in the Mets dugout appeared like this:

4. Beltran CF
5. Bay LF
6. Davis 1B
7. Francouer RF
8. Thole C
9. Dickey P

Alright, let's organize the claims that can be made arguing this abominable lineup.

Luis Castillo is batting second. Luis Castillo and his .242 batting average, 15 runs scored, and five extra base hits, batting anywhere in the order besides eighth is an ignominy. His asset to the Mets is making contact with the baseball, which, 70% of the time, he pounds into the ground, according to Fangraphs. His BABIP (or batting average on balls in play, for the non stat-nerds) is .250, the lowest it has ever been in his career, yet he is the second baseman everyday for the New York Mets.His defensive contribution goes as far as knocking down what's in front of him, and not much else. His range is diminished to virtually nothing after dual knee problems. He'll scoop up and execute nearly all routine plays perfectly, though.
Next, Jeff Francoeur is in the starting lineup while Angel Pagan is on the bench. That sentence in itself is an absolute humiliation. Pagan has proven to be the team's most reliable player both offensively and defensively in 2010. Francoeur has proved to be the team's least reliable player, at the very least on the offensive end. Sporting an OBP of .299 after Sunday's loss, compare that to starter R.A. Dickey's .300 percentage, and you only begin to realize Francoeur's flaws as a baseball player. He swings at 61.4% of the pitches he sees this year. 43.7% of pitches out of the strike zone thrown to him, he hacks at anyway. Add that with the fact that he's batting as un-clutch as he ever has in his career, and it's obvious that he has no business being on this team.
Josh Thole is not an eighth-spot hitter. In 17 games this year his BABIP is sitting at .478, with a .429 batting average (12-for-28). His OBP is over .500 and the rookie catcher is OPSing (OBP+SLG) a whopping 1.087. The argument could not only be made that Thole should be the everyday catcher, but the number two hitter in the lineup behind Jose Reyes.

But Jerry's lineup-assembly is only half of his managerial handicap. He's seemingly convinced that an out is not the single most valuable thing to the opponent. At the rate he sacrifice bunts, the Mets might as well start each inning with an out, and Manuel will be sure to give a free one away soon enough.

His use of the bullpen also exemplifies his genius, just ask Fernando Nieve. Who would've guessed that after nearly a half-season of being used everyday that his performance would eventually regress? Not Jerry, apparently. Nieve was designated for assignment last week and none other than Oliver Perez has been the go-to guy deep in the ballgame for Manuel.

Jerry's handling of injuries have been phenomenal as well. Especially in the case of Jose Reyes. Reyes injured his oblique taking BP in Puerto Rico against the Marlins. Manuel sat Reyes for the following few games, then proceeded to place him back in the lineup knowing he was not only less than one hundred percent healthy, but could not bat left-handed. After inevitably struggling, Reyes was dropped to second in the order before re-injuring the side on a throw from deep in the hole. Even then, Manuel was clueless. David Wright had to stop play and call out his manager to alert him of his ailing shortstop.

However, when arguably the most consistent starting pitcher this season, resurging knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, tweaks a leg muscle, Jerry's first instinct was to remove the cruising Dickey, who allowed only two hits and walked none through 70 pitches in today's game. Manuel allowed Dickey to stay in for two more batters, until he realized an odd throwing motion on Dickey's throw to first base to get the out. Dickey said he was fine, and knowingly held back because the opposing pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, was the baserunner. Manuel would hear none of it, and pulled out Dickey much to his dismay. The Mets lost the game as the bullpen allowed a run to cross the plate in the bottom of the eighth.

Mets fans can only hope Minaya acts swiftly in replacing the fool at the helm of the team.

As for the three comedically bad baseball players mentioned above, according to reports by FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, they could be on their way out of New York. Rosenthal reports that Minaya has explored a trade with the Kansas City Royals, bringing up the names of Castillo, Francoeur, and Perez, in a possible swap for starter Gil Meche, reliever Kyle Farnsworth, and outfielder Jose Guillen. The salaries of the three on each side match up almost perfectly. Obviously we will hear more as we draw nearer to the July 31st trade deadline.

NBA Free Agency: 2010

It's what teams had been waiting for, for years. It's what teams had sacrificed success for. It's hijacked the headlines over championships. It's been a glimmer of hope for the bottom-dwellers of the NBA.

It's come and gone.

The madness that was 2010 NBA free agency has, for the most part, come to a conclusion. Now that the dust has settled, let's take a look at the events that have been so highly anticipated over the past few years, and based on drama, certainly did not disappoint.

As the clock struck midnight on July 1, teams wasted no time convincing free agents that their franchise was the one for them. The instant negotiations could begin, teams like the Knicks, who were desperate for a new beginning of sorts, were already in talks with free agents. For New York, the midnight discussions were with guards Mike Miller, Joe Johnson, and later a conference call with forward Amar'e Stoudemire.

The next day, however, was one of much greater importance for the locals. Both the Nets and Knicks had meetings scheduled in Akron, Ohio with new free agent LeBron James, who couldn't get enough of the spotlight. New Jersey's meeting was at 9 a.m. while the Knicks' followed them with a 1 p.m. gathering. Both teams reported the meetings went well and were encouraged with what they saw from James and his party.

The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat made their pitches to James the next day, and the Clippers and the only team that James has ever known, the Cavs, met with him the next day.

But the Knicks didn't wait on the "King" to decide.

Instead, the reached out to Stoudemire, whom they only spoke with over the phone before reports of a principal agreement emerged. The reports proved to be correct (as was rarely the case over the past few weeks) and the Knicks announced the signing of Stoudemire to a maximum 5-year, $97 million deal on Monday, four days before contracts could be signed.

The commitment was made.

Appallingly, however, LeBron James still managed to grope the headlines when he announced that night that his decision would be made public on July 8th during an hour-long special on ESPN, with a small portion of the proceeds being donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

So until July 8th, the spotlight shone brightly on (you guessed it) James, and only on James.

Reports here, sources there, all pointing in different directions. Chicago outlets had him going to the Bulls. Miami reports had him landing in South Beach. New York sources undoubtedly saw him joining Stoudemire with the Knicks. All while Cleveland people knew he was going to stay.

On July 7th, a key factor to James' ultimate decision was announced. Reports came out that Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will team up in Miami and play for the Heat. Miami now had two All-Stars on their team, and one of the best in the game, in Wade. The Heat still had salary cap space to sign more free agents, but not enough to offer a max deal. Enough for one to suspect James wouldn't possibly choose Miami, right? Or if that wasn't enough, it's Dwyane Wade's house. He's said so himself. Could James, in the process of becoming recognized as one of the greatest to ever play, agree to ride in the back seat of Wade's car? The Heat have been his franchise for the past seven years, culminating with a championship ring in 2006.

Common sense told everyone that New York would be his choice. The opportunity to join Amar'e Stoudemire in 2010, and the ability for the Knicks to maintain cap space next summer to build an even stronger franchise was something that other teams simply could not offer.

Add that with the fact that the Knicks contingent held a second, "secret" meeting with LeBron's team just days before his decision to discuss New York's salary cap situation, and Knicks fans could see no other option than James joining Stoudemire to form potentially the greatest pick-and-roll combination ever.

Not to mention that James and personal advisors Maverick Carter and Randy Mims made a trip to New York the day before "The Decision," as it was promoted, was made, and the special would be filmed in Greenwhich, Connecticut, mere minutes from the Knicks practice facility.

James was even reportedly seen eating dinner in New York City with Stoudemire and former Knick Allan Houston.

Up to this point, all signs were pointing to Madison Square Garden as James' new home. That is, until slightly past midnight Thursday. That's when Newsday's Alan Hahn dropped the atomic bomb that spread across the country in minutes. Via Twitter, Hahn reported, "Multiple sources are telling Newsday that LeBron James has decided to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. The new Big Three is here."

But it can't be. It makes no sense.

James would be taking less money and joining another player's team. He'd be kissing goodbye any chance he had at being compared to the greatest ever. He'd be taking the easy way out, joining two All-Stars. If he's leaving his hometown, why not come to New York, the mecca, where winning just one championship makes you a hero? But there's no way he's leaving in the first place! He's not making Cleveland watch a one-hour special on why he's leaving the city with absolutely nothing!

He couldn't rip his hometown's proverbial heart out on national television, could he?

Yes. He. Did.

In his hour-long "Decision", James announced he would "take his talents to South Beach, " and play for Miami next season.

Gone.

After seven seasons in Cleveland, and zero championships, James chose to move on from the city he's called home, abandoning the Cavaliers, a team that instantly morphed into a bad basketball team.

Seven seasons concluded with one long-drawn-out hour. An hour in which ESPN's Jim Gray was far from eager to get to the only question that the ten million viewers wanted the answer to. With questions such as, "Where's the powder, LeBron?" and "LeBron, are you still a nail-biter?" the presentation was almost laughable.

Did Kobe Bryant need an ESPN Special to announce he will be returning to the Lakers this season? What about Dwyane Wade? Maybe Kevin Durant should've contacted the network with plans of a live airing of a "ceremonial signing of the extension."

This attention-grabbing stunt that LeBron James pulled was bad for everybody involved. It made ESPN look even worse than usual. It made Jim Gray seem like an idiot because of the format that the network likely demanded he asked the questions in. And most importantly, LeBron James made himself the most hated man in the NBA in an hour.

But Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert managed to overtake James on the Stupidity-Scale.

Hours after James made his decision public, Gilbert released a letter to the fans via the Cavs' website. In this letter he described James' actions by using the words, "cowardly betrayal" and referring to James as the "self-entitled former king." Gilbert made a guarantee to the fans, saying (with caps lock on), ""I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"

Gilbert succeeded at handling this in the only manner worse than James handled it. Congratulations, Dan.

With LeBron James crossed off the Knicks' list of possibilities, Donnie Walsh didn't wait long to pull off "Plan B".

David Lee was sent to Golden State in a sign-and-trade deal for forwards Anthony Randolph and Ronny Turiaf, guard Kelenna Azubuike, and a draft pick. Lee's new contract is worth $80 million over six years.

Saying goodbye to Lee is difficult for Knicks fans to do, but Walsh managed to get three bodies and a draft pick for him, all while not locking the Knicks into any more long-term contracts.

In Randolph, New York gets a potential star. Standing at 6'11" with a slim build, he's been compared to Kevin Durant. He has the ability to score and block shots at a superb rate.

Ronny Turiaf is a defensive monster with scoring ability. He'll contribute on the defensive end by blocking shots and shutting down the opponent's big offensive threat.

Kelenna Azubuike is a fourth-year guard out of Kentucky. He was born in London and has Nigerian and British roots. He's a deadly shooter who plays lock-down defense, and will thrive in Mike D'Antoni's system.

The Knicks were also left without a point guard after Chris Duhon signed in Orlando following two sub-par seasons in New York. Ray Felton was signed in his place, accepting a two-year offer from Walsh and the Knicks. Felton ha been the starting point guard on the Bobcats for the majority of the past five seasons. He describes himself as a "warrior" and is excited to get a chance to play under Mike D'Antoni as well.

As the Miami Heat formed their super-team, Donnie Walsh and the Knicks are forming a team built to beat the new powerhouses of the east. With enough cap space to offer a maximum contract in both of the next two offseasons, the possibilities are endless in New York City. As Amar'e Stoudemire put it:

The Knicks are back.

Minaya, Mets Righting the Ship

The open of the 2010 season had many fans of the New York Metropolitans up in arms.

The starting first baseman and clean-up hitter was none other than Mike Jacobs. Gary Matthews, Jr. was the starting center fielder. Sean Green, coming off a career-worst season in many respects, was in the bullpen. Frank Catalanotto was the team's prime pinch hitting option, instead of Chris Carter, who displayed his offensive prowess during Spring Training. Phenom first baseman Ike Davis was in Triple-A, as Atlanta Braves prospect Jason Heyward, held in much the same regard to that organization, was making the Turner Field outfield his new stomping grounds. Manager Jerry Manuel attempted to transform one of the league's best leadoff men into 3-hitter. Angel Pagan was being placed 6th or lower in the lineup on a nightly basis, even after proving that he can be an asset to the top of the order with his high OBP and low strikeout numbers. And finally, top starting pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia, 20, was facing major league competition, but as a reliever. Not only was Mejia's stamina being negatively effected, but Manuel demanded that Mejia only throw his fastball--stunting the development of the secondary pitches he will need as a starting pitcher as his career develops.

Soon, however, GM Omar Minaya and Manuel started to wake up.

As the first week of the season concluded, so did Gary Matthews' career as a starting major league outfielder. Angel Pagan assumed his duties and hasn't relinquished them since.

After appearing in one game for the Mets in April and allowing a home run, Sean Green was placed on the Disabled List with a "right side injury". He is yet to resume baseball activities.

Next, after 7 games, 7 strikeouts, and a .208 clip, Mike Jacobs was designated for assignment. Days later, 23-year-old Ike Davis was called up from Triple-A Buffalo. Davis has been the starting first baseman ever since.

The bench that consisted Frank Catalanotto (batting .160), and Gary Matthews (.190) was eventually broken up. Catalanotto was DFA'd in favor of Chris Carter, who adds a tremendous amount of pop off the bench. Catalanotto retired just days later. Gary Matthews also was DFA'd in June, and career minor leaguer Jesus Feliciano was recalled to take his place.

After 20 games, the "Jose Reyes Batting Third" mission was aborted by Jerry Manuel. Reyes hit just .207 and sported an OBP of just .253 in 82 at bats. Upon returning to the leadoff spot on May 15, he's batted .337 with an OPS of almost .900. The leadoff pep is back in his step.

"I am home." Reyes said.

With Luis Castillo on the Disabled List, the 2-hole was no longer being held hostage, and Angel Pagan was able to grab a hold on it June 2nd, and has remained there since. He has batted .300 since the move.

The most recent, and arguably most important, of the slue of corrections made by the Mets before the halfway point this season is the demotion of pitcher Jenrry Mejia. Mejia appeared in 30 games in relief this season. His lack of control proved to bite him on a few occasions, but Mejia was one of the most reliable arms in the pen during his time in New York.

Omar Minaya made the move after losing 4-0 to the Yankees Sunday. He explained to the media later that night, “We just felt that it was the right time to get him down there and continue his development,” he said. “He’s done very well here. We see him long-term as a starter.”

Mejia was pleased with the move as well.

"It's not like they're sending me down because I didn’t do my job. I want to be a starter.", Mejia commented after learning of the move.

It's no secret the Mets are looking to bolster their rotation with hopes becoming the team to beat in the National League East division. The question now begs to be asked.

Is Mejia being sent down and converted to a starter to showcase him to other teams?

Other teams certainly have interest in Mejia. Will Omar Minaya be willing to part with the 20-year-old top-prospect in order to win in 2010? Will the Mets be able to land a top starter in New York without dealing Mejia?

Minaya and every Mets fan would be elated with a playoff appearance in 2010, it would be the team's first since the magical 2006 season. But trading away the franchise's largest chip at age 20 could prove to be detrimental to the future.

Five Games In: Mets Show Positives, Negatives

Five games into the 2010 season, the New York Mets have shown that they will have no problem competing, but at the same time, there is still room for improvement.

The 2-3 Mets have drastically improved their offense from the woeful 2009 lineup. Power is now looking to be an advantage for the Metropolitans, as newcomer Rod Barajas just recently enjoyed a two-home run performance, as did Jeff Francoeur, who looks to excel in his first full season in New York.

Free agent acquisition Jason Bay has also displayed outstanding offensive output. He has already taken advantage of the vast outfield in his new home ballpark; he shot a liner all the way to the left-center field wall on Opening Day for his first triple of the season.

A resurgent David Wright has already shown a new and improved approach offensively. His stance is slightly altered in 2010. He is standing a tad more bent at the knees, and his arms are noticeably lowered. Wright's first at-bat of the season resulted in a home run to right field. He has also put up considerably better at-bat's than he did last season; he has walked six times in the first five games.

The new David Wright now looks to pull the ball with power. Coming off a season in which he hit only ten homers, Wright realized change was needed. He participated in rigorous off-season weight training, and has greatly strengthened his upper body. Look for him to return to form as a vaunted home run threat this season.

Right fielder Jeff Francoeur has performed excellently thus far in 2010. He is hitting the cover off the ball, batting .444, but more importantly sporting an OBP of .500. He has walked three times in the opening two series of the season (Francoeur totaled 23 base-on-balls last season). He has smashed two home runs, and his overall approach appears better than ever.

On April 10, the Mets received some help they desperately will need in order to compete in 2010. Shortstop Jose Reyes returned to the lineup after thyroid issues delayed his season debut by about a week.

In his debut, Reyes went 1-for-4 at the plate, crushing a line drive back up the middle in the 9th inning for a single. He was shaky in the field, as one could expect after an 11-month hiatus from the game, however he did flash some leather in the 8th inning of the game against Washington, barehanding a hopper up the middle and tossing to first to get the out.

More help is on the way for the Mets.

Center fielder Carlos Beltran is recovering from late off-season surgery on his injured knee, and expects to return to the team by May. His bat and glove will be warmly welcomed to the lineup.

The return of the all-star outfielder will likely make the members of the current platoon expendable. Both Gary Matthews, Jr. and Angel Pagan have handled center field duties well so far, but once Beltran returns, only one will be needed, and presumably neither will accept a minor league assignment. It will be intriguing to watch how these circumstances unfold in the coming months.

The Mets' current first base situation is imperfect to say the least. After Daniel Murphy suffered a sprained MCL in the latter portion of Spring Training, the starting job was left to returning Met, Mike Jacobs.

Jacobs, along with aging Fernando Tatis, have combined for not much offense (the two combine for a .182 average so far in '10), and just as little defense. With slugger Ike Davis waiting in the wings, it will be interesting to see how patient the Mets will be with the situation.

The starting rotation for New York has been expectedly unstable thus far. Ace Johan Santana looks to restore his position as baseball's best after an injury-shortened 2009 season.

The rest of the staff has been consistently inconsistent.

John Maine started the second game of the season for the Mets, and did so terribly. In just five innings of work, Maine gave up four runs on eight hits, including two home runs, and walked one.

The following night, rookie Jon Niese, yet another Met returning from injury in '09, pitched well. He also got through six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Niese displayed his curveball, which remains his go-to pitch.

Mike Pelfrey took the mound the following night. He went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and a K:BB of 4:4. Nothing lights-out, but solid.

Then the unpredictable Oliver Perez took the mound.

For the first few innings Perez appeared locked in. But little by little, the wheels started coming loose, and after two 2-RBI hits by Willy Tavares, Perez was rattled. He finished with 101 pitches in just 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits but walked four. Perez struck out six in a losing effort.

The Mets' bullpen has shown thus far to be the team's strong point. Closer Fransisco Rodriguez (and his goggles that took 2009 off in favor of contact lenses) has saved both of his team's victories this season and has looked outstanding.

Fernando Nieve, who lost out on the final spot in the rotation to Niese, has surprised everyone and is now the Mets best relief asset. "Fred Snow" (English translation) has yet to allow a run this season in four relief innings, while surrendering only two hits. Look for him to jump in the rotation should any problems arise with one of the men that won a starting job over him.

20-year-old phenom Jenrry Mejia has looked sharp aside from his first few minutes in the big leagues. In that first appearance, the young Dominican allowed several liners, as his heaters sat right over the heart of the plate, waiting to be tattooed by Marlins hitters. However, Mejia dug himself out of the hole nicely, escaping that inning with only one run. He is yet to allow a hit since.

Keep in mind that Mejia is a starting pitcher by trade, and the Mets plan on him starting games for them in the future. Some worry that his relief duties of 2010 may stunt his growth as a starter. It is a very valid argument. This situation is shaping up to be eerily similar to that of Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain when he was first fist-pumping the Yankees to victory in the summer of 2007. Time will only tell how this situation will play out.

The Mets have improved greatly, and they couldn't afford not to after the disaster that was 2009. The offense is now a strength, and the bullpen so far appears solid.

But the Mets this season, will live and die by their rotation.

Are their current five enough to keep them afloat? Or will a move need to be made for a starter to keep the team in contention? Again, time will only tell.

2010 MLB Preview: Mets

With Opening Day just a few weeks away, hope springs eternal for the New York Mets and their reccently tortured fans. These last four off-seasons for Mets fans may very well have been the most difficult for any baseball fan to endure. After heartbreak, collapses, and a rash of injuries, Mets fans need something to look forward to in the upcoming 2010 season.

Here's the obvious thing to look forward to- the addition of a perennial All Star left fielder, Jason Bay. Bay brings a power threat to Citi Field, something the Mets sorely lacked in 2009. Their lack of power came at a bad time, when they first moved in to their expansive new home. The size of the stadium can't be an excuse, home runs need to be hit no matter where you're playing. Jason Bay also adds a veteran presence and a fresh outlook to a clubhouse where the past is something that needs to be forgotten.

The Mets problems last year were certainly mainly caused by injuries. However, that is certainly no excuse to play the way they did. The New York Mets can return to their 2007 form (pre- collapse) if they play fundamentally sund baseball, and stay healthy. However, this has already proved a problem with the club this spring. Carlos Beltran will miss at least 3 weeks to start the season, rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee throughout late March and April.

A bigger concern for the Mets, however, is the long-term health of their young All Star shortstop, Jose Reyes. His imbalance in thyroid levels are not only a problem for the Mets' short term success, but Reyes' long term well-being. Hopefully for Reyes and the Mets, he gets back in a short time and is back to normal in a few weeks, as New York will need Jose Reyes' speed at the top of the order if they plan on competing with Philadelphia.

There are a few bright spots in Mets camp this spring that have potential to greatly effect the team as early as this season. First baseman Ike Davis, the team's first round drsaft pick in 2008, has proven to be a dominant offensive force. He has slugged his way onto the radars of many Mets fans and will presumably be a New York Met by the end of 2010. He has shown the ability to hit mammoth home runs, something that could be potentially vital to the Mets in '10.

Another young gun to look out for this season is pitcher Jenrry Mejia. The 20-year-old Dominican has pitched in two minor league seasons and is looking to be a future ace for the Mets. Throughout his career, he has prominantly been a starter, but manager Jerry Manuel is considering using Mejia as the team's set-up man in 2010, an experiment that could potentially stunt his growth as a starting pitcher. There is no doubt that Mejia can successfully pitch out of the 'pen, but his growth as a starter is what is undoubtedly at stake here. Mets fans can only hope that the right decision will untimately be made.

Middle infielder Ruben Tejada may also get a call to the majors this season. He has shown great hitting ability along with remarkable range in the infield. Tejada may expect a call to the Mets if Luis Castillo reverts back to 2008 form.

The New York Mets and their fans no doubt will have an entertaining season to look forward to. The Mets are a talented team full of potential. Their core of returning veterans such as Frankie Rodriguez, Johan Santana and David Wright will provide energy and great play all year. Many question marks remain for the 2010 campaign, however. Will the rotation be able to get it done? Will they have a solid eigth inning reliever to serve as a bridge to K-Rod? And most importantly, can they avoid injuries? Nobody knows the answer to these questions but regardless, Mets fans will undoubtedly have an exciting season to watch.

The Knicks 2010 Plan

It has been widely publicized that the Knicks have enough cap space this upcoming offseason to afford two maximum contracts. Indeed, they will have the space, but this will not be the correct way to approach the long-awaited summer of 2010.

The salary cap for the 2010-11 season has not yet been determined, but it is projected to be approximately $54 million. The Knicks will presumably have five players on their roster following this season:

1. Eddy Curry at $11.2 million
2. Danilo Gallinari at $3.3 million
3. Wilson Chandler at $2.1 million
4. Toney Douglas at $1 million
5. Bill Walker at approximately $854,000

Sergio Rodriguez has a $2.8 million qualifying offer due for 2010-11, but it can be withdrawn by the Knicks before July 23 without needing the approval of Rodriguez. In my opinion, this is the route Walsh should take.

The five players listed above total $18.5 in team salary. However, there is a salary cap rule that requires the mandatory 12 roster spots to be accounted for, salary cap-wise. The "phantom" player cap hold costs the team $488,000 for each roster spot short of the mandatory 12.

The Knicks will have the mentioned five players, plus three second round draft picks on their roster come free agency time, totaling eight roster spots filled. This leaves four unoccupied spaces on the roster, costing the Knicks $488,000 times four spots, which is $1.95 million in holds counting against the cap this offseason.

Let's assume the Knicks renounce David Lee and Tracy McGrady's Bird Rights, which would cost them $10.5 in cap holds, and also renounce the exceptions (Mid Level Exception, Bi-Annual Agreement) which would be a $5.8 million cap hold.

This would leave only the five players' salaries, and four "phantom" salaries, counting against the cap, which again is projected to be $54 million.

The Knicks would have $33.4 in cap space to spend this summer.

For a $54 million cap, a maximum contract would amount to $16.2 million. So, yes, two max players could hypothetically be afforded, but that would leave $1 million to spend to fill out the rest of the roster.

Signing one maximum contract is pretty much a given. Whether it be LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh Joe Johnson, or another top-tier player, Donnie Walsh will bring one of them to MSG.

If this isn't the case, then the 2010 plan has failed.

With $33.4 million at his disposal, enough to afford two maximum players, not obtaining a single one would be considered a failure. Considering the amount of time that has been put into the plan (the sacrificing of two seasons), coming away with none of the prime available players would simply be considered a backfiring of the plan.

With that said, the offseason is obviously dependent on the signing of a maximum player. Personally, I believe LeBron will remain a Cavalier. I do believe that Dwyane Wade will explore all available options however, and eventually land in New York. Just a hunch.

So, by now it's mid-July and the Knicks have Dwyane Wade all to themselves, still with $17.2 million to spend.

Options are numerous for Walsh at this juncture. Many free agents, along with trades, are on the table for Walsh to closely examine. But his next move should be a gimme.

Sign David Lee.

Lee will really be the top forward available this summer next to Chris Bosh, who will likely receive a max deal somewhere. Last offseason, Lee was looking for a deal somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-12 million. No team signed him to an offer sheet with these demands, and Lee remained a Knick.

But now, with an All-Star appearance under his belt, a jump shot that scrapes nylon more often than not, and newly acquired post moves to call his own, Lee will receive big money from someone, and if Chris Bosh isn't a New York Knick in 2010-11, David Lee must be.

Once a paramount player such as Wade is received, expect Lee to lower his demands from New York, and return to the Knicks for approximately $11.5 million in 2010-11.

But then there's the possibility of bringing back Tracy McGrady.

McGrady has said that he would return to New York on the cheap if it meant being surrounded by a great cast of players. I see it very unlikely that the Knicks will be able to afford both Lee and T-Mac, however.

If Lee accepts a deal of about $7-8 million, this would free up $4-5 million more to spend. In my opinion, a $4-5 million deal would be hard for McGrady to reject.

He's coming off a partially played season, and being surrounded with Dwyane Wade, an improved and even more experienced David Lee, and more players to be acquired later in the summer, is too enticing.

McGrady's deal won't be the one the Knicks would have to worry about being accepted, David Lee's is.

Lee's ego is seemingly growing with each double-double, and I really can't think his contract demands would decrease after his wonderful 2009-10 season.

If he bites the bullet and accepts a heavily back-loaded deal that earns him only $7-8 million in '10-11 (but maybe, say, $12-13 million a couple years down the road), this would benefit the Knicks greatly...but it might be a tough pill for Lee to swallow, as he may have better offers elsewhere.

Granted, I'm speaking from a fans' perspective, but if I'm David Lee, I trust Donnie Walsh to lead the team to a championship(s) remotely soon. He has carried out his plan very well to this point, and I have no reason to think he won't lead the Knicks to greatness, just as he did the Pacers in the 90s.

I would take a cheaper deal than I desire to play on this team. I would sign for the not-so-much-now, but back-loaded deal to stay in New York.

So, with Lee and T-Mac on board, the Knicks still need a role-playing guard type, and they won't have to look far. Eddie House is a fine option as a guard off the bench and a quick scoring option.

If House won't settle for about $1 million dollars, Anthony Carter from Denver, as well as Luther Head of Indiana, Anthony Morrow of Golden State, Acie Law of Chicago, or even Earl Boykins of the Wizards are all viable options for Walsh.

The Knicks would now have around $5 million to spend in free agency, and important positions are yet to be filled. The team still has no center. David Lee cannot be the full-time center for another season. He lacks the size and defensive ability to do so.

Donnie Walsh has coveted Marcus Camby, and will do so stronger than ever, come summer 2010, according to the New York Daily News.

Although Camby will be 36-years-old next season, his defensive and shot-blocking abilities are still ever-present, and he simply carries more of a presence than Lee does in the middle.

At Camby's age, and with his fond memories of New York, he could very well sign for the available money the Knicks have, about $4-5 million.

So the Knicks now have their center, but still have a gaping hole at the point guard position, as they withdrew Sergio Rodriguez's qualifying offer prior to the offseason to create more cap space.

Time to deal.

Walsh has said that his next trades will be ones that bring in salary, rather than ship it out. One would have to think he would inquire Minnesota regarding Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio, but the likelihood of a deal landing Rubio in NY isn't very bright, as he signed a new three year contract to a team in Barcelona in the summer of 2009.

So Walsh will have to expand his horizons to Toronto for Jose Calderon, Charlotte for DJ Augustin, Detroit for Rodney Stuckey, or possibly even Washington for Gilbert Arenas—pending his status with the league.

If Walsh can find a deal of his liking that works out financially, a point guard will be found, and the line up will just about be filled out.

1. Calderon, Augustin, or other potential trade options
2. Wade
3. McGrady
4. Lee
5. Camby

A very respectable lineup. Throw in Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Eddie House (or his replacement), and Bill Walker off the bench and it's a nice little project put together.

If you haven't noticed, this is still a very small team. Without any remaining cap space to sign free agent big men, a trade would be ideal.

The last piece to round out the 2010-2011 Knicks? Hasheem Thabeet.

Thabeet was recently sent to the D-League to work on his skills, and has dominated in his time there. He has remarkable size, standing at 7'3'', and he will add bulk to his body as he ages.

Given the chance to grow under the D'Antoni system, while adding his already developed ball-swatting abilities as Marcus Camby's back-up, Thabeet will be the next big thing at the center position in the NBA in no time.

Well, there it is: the entire offseason. Yes, there are plenty of moving parts, but with this main framework, the Knicks will instantly becoming a shoo-in for the NBA Playoffs, and a title contender as team chemistry develops.

NHL Trade Deadline Frenzy

Just 3 days after a phenomenal Olympics games, the NHL trade deadline has past, and several teams have solidified their teams. Here's a rundown of the local teams, the smartest teams and the...not so smart teams as the deadline is now in the rear view mirror. Who made themselves better? Who's going to watch teams start passing them by? And most importantly, which NHL team is now poised for a run at Lord Stanley's Cup?

The Locals
New York Rangers (29-27-7) – After making 3 moves before the Olympic break, the Rangers only swapped minor leaguers with the Detroit Red Wings and Phoenix Coyotes in the final 3 days before the deadline. In their moves before the deadline, the Blueshirts acquired tough guy Jody Shelley (from SJS) and grinding forward Brandon Prust (from CGY) to add some needed grit to the team. In the deal for Prust, in which they dealt away offseason additions Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins, the Rangers acquired Finnish scorer Olli Jokinen to give Marian Gaborik some scoring help. However, the Rangers did not manage to free up any cap room at the deadline. Defensemen Wade Redden ($6.5 Million cap hit) and Michal Rozsival ($5 Million cap hit) have managed just 2 goals and 26 points between the two players. Trading either would have been difficult, but Glen Sather always has some magic when it comes to trades.
Notes: In 7 games with the Rangers, Jokinen has 2 goals and 3 assists, while Prust has 2 assists to go along with 34 penalty minutes. The Rangers are tied for 8th in the east.

New York Islanders (26-29-8) – In recent memory, the Islanders have traded for more draft picks than you can count. However, they were relatively quiet at the deadline, only swapping AHL players with Columbus and dealing defenseman Andy Sutton for a second round pick. With the recent injury of Rick DiPietro’s knee, the Islanders were caught in a bad position, not being able to trade one of their two solid goaltenders (Dwayne Roloson or Martin Biron) for needed scoring help due to DiPietro’s condition. The Isles are still in reach of a playoff spot, but made a good decision at the deadline not dealing any of their prospects or rising players.
Notes: DiPietro appeared in 8 games this season before re-injuring himself, going 2-5-0, registering a 2.60 GAA. The Islanders are 5 points out of a playoff spot.

New Jersey Devils (38-21-3) – Making the biggest splash in the NHL so far this year, the Devils made a deal for prolific scorer Ilya Kovalchuk (from ATL) before the Olympic break to help their 21st ranked offense. Kovalchuk brings speed and skill that the fans of New Jersey have not seen in a long time. The deal also brought in (D) Anssi Salmela in exchange for (D) Johnny Oduya, (F) Niclas Bergfors, (F) Patrice Cormier and a 1st round pick. In addition, the Devils traded for (D) Martin Skoula (from TOR), who was dealt from the Penguins to the Leafs just a day ago. With the trade for Kovalchuk and their already great goaltending and defense, the Devils have put themselves in a spot to challenge for the cup.
Notes: Kovalchuk has 2 goals and 5 assists in 7 games with the Devils. The Devils lead the Atlantic divison by 1 point over the Penguins.

The Winner
Washington Capitals (41-13-8) – Any questions about who the favorite in the eastern conference is have been answered. Today, the Capitals made 4 moves, 2 being with the Carolina Hurricanes. With the additions of standout blueliner Joe Corvo (from CAR), for the price of a 2011 2nd rounder, (D) Brian Pothier, and (F) Oskar Osala and the addition of defenseman Milan Jurcina (from CBJ) , the Capitals 18th ranked defense seems to be secured for a Stanley Cup run. In addition, the Capitals added forwards Scott Walker (from CAR) and Eric Belanger (from MIN), to add scoring depth to their already 1st ranked offense, which has scored 33 more goals than any other team in the NHL.
Notes: Jurcina played with the Capitals from 2006-09. The Caps currently lead the NHL in points with 90.

Why’d You Do That?
Carolina Hurricanes (25-30-7) – After a miserable start to the season, the Canes seemed to turn things around. It comes as somewhat of a surprise that just a few years removed from a Stanley Cup win, the Hurricanes have made 7 trades at this deadline, many of which were shipping out solid players for draft picks. The list of players traded include (D) Joe Corvo (to WAS), (D) Niclas Wallin (to SJS), (F) Matt Cullen (to OTT), (D) Aaron Ward (to ANA), (F) Scott Walker (to WAS), (D) Andrew Alberts (to VAN), (F) Stephan Yelle and (F) Harrison Reed (both to COL). That’s four of their top six defensemen being traded, on a team that is only 8 points out of a playoff spot in a wide open eastern conference. The canes did keep aging defenseman Ray Whitney (Age 37), who was expected to be traded. With the cleaning the Hurricanes did this trade deadline, a season with some hope left is now almost surely over.
Notes: After starting the season losing 16 of 18, the Canes are currently on a 6 game winning streak.

This Could Work…
Phoenix Coyotes (37-22-5) – Perhaps the biggest surprise in the NHL this season, the Phoenix Coyotes were buyers at the deadline, making 7 acquisitions.
The biggets trade was obtaining winger Wojtek Wolski, who has 47 points this season, from the Avalanche in exchange for 3rd year player (F) Peter Mueller and former Hobey Baker winner (F) Kevin Porter. The Coyotes also acquired scoring depth by the likes of (F) Lee Stempniak (from TOR) to add to their 25th ranked offense. They also attempted to boost their already stingy defense, backstopped by Russian goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, by receiving veteran defensemen Mathieu Schneider (from VAN, 739 career points) and Derek Morris (from BOS). However, both defensemen come with some risk. Schneider, who is 40 years old, has only played in 17 games this season. Morris, a former first round pick, is on his 3rd team in 2 years and has only managed 3 goals this year with a -2 rating. If Wolski can produce, Schneider can get healthy and Morris can hold up, the Coyotes could be a tough team to meet in the playoffs under new coach Dave Tippett.
Notes: Morris played with the Coyotes from 2004-08. Schneider has not played since December 16. The Coyotes are 5th in the West and have not made the playoffs since 2002.

Where Were You?
Boston Bruins (27-23-11) – With their offense dead last in the NHL in scoring, what did the Bruins do at the deadline? Trade defenseman Derek Morris for a pick and add defenseman Dennis Seidenberg (from FLA), who has 2 goals this season. With injuries hampering them all season, the Bruins needed to add a solid scorer, and they did not add a forward. A season after finishing first in the east, the Bruins are holding on to the 8th spot in the conference with solid defense and goaltending, but have 3 teams within 2 points of them, and did not do much to keep their playoff spot secured.
Notes: The Bruins have averaged 2.33 goals/game this season. Marc Savard (2nd on the team in points for a forward), has played in just 38 games.

NBA Trade Deadline

Donnie Walsh is looking to shake up this current Knicks roster, but more importantly, indirectly affecting the offseason situation.

Let's recap yesterday's events:

The Knicks traded guard Nate Robinson to Boston for guards Eddie House, J.R. Giddens, and a 2nd round draft pick. This trade is yet to be announced.

Hours later, the Knicks acquired forward Brian Cardinal for the T-Wolves for outcast center Darko Milicic. This deal is official, and Cardinal is likely to be waived to create roster space for upcoming trades.

The Knicks have been in constant talks with Houston revolving around guard Tracy McGrady. Late Wednesday night, talks stalled mainly due to disputes over the protection of Houston's incoming picks, and Houston switched their attention over to Sacramento to now pursue the player they've coveted the most, guard Kevin Martin.

Early Thursday morning, a deal was agreed to in principal sending McGrady, forwards Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey to Sacramento for Martin, forwards Kenny Thomas and Hilton Armstrong, and guard Sergio Rodriguez. There is still a possibility that the Knicks can join in this deal to make it a three-team trade and acquire McGrady, which will cause the swap to most likely go down to the wire and require most of the time allowed to complete (about three more hours).

Talks arose early Thursday morning that the Knicks were interested in Chicago forward Tyrus Thomas and sending forward Al Harrington to the Bulls in return. But hours later, talks fizzled and this particular trade is now seen as "a long shot now" according to league sources cited by Yahoo! Sports.

*Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that a deal has been agreed to between the Bulls and Bobcats sending Flip Murray, Acie Law, and a future first round pick to Chicago for Thomas.

The McGrady trade is leaving me confused as to what the Rockets' interests really are. A deal with the Knicks was reportedly in place, with the only haggling point being the protection of the picks. I couldn't imagine this being the deal-breaker for Houston; something else had to have been up in the air.

As for the trade that has gone down with Sacramento, I'm still in confusion. Kevin Martin is a very good basketball player, potentially an all-star; but the man is fragile. The oft-injured Martin has averaged to miss over 20 games each season of his career which is in its sixth season. He has four years remaining on his contract at a steep price for any budget, and will likely handcuff the Rockets for years. But I'm not the one running the team.

This deal will get done, as it helps Walsh's beloved 2010 plan far too much for him to pass up. The Knicks have been dealing with the Rockets, who wanted zero protection on both incoming picks. But as of right now, Tracy McGrady is property of the Kings, who may have different interests than Houston-meaning the deal with Sacramento may be less dependent on the picks. Just an opinion from the outside.

UPDATE: 12:44 P.M: The Nate Robinson deal has been tentatively agreed to, sending Nate Robinson and a second player to Boston for Eddie House, J.R. Giddens, and Bill Walker. The second Knick involved is not immediately clear, according to ESPN's Chris Sheridan.

UPDATE: 12:58 P.M: The Kings are asking for David Lee from the Knicks in order to take on the steep price of Jared Jeffries, Yahoo! Sports reports. Personal opinion: if Walsh wants to sign 2 max contracts, there will be no cap space left to re-sign Lee this offseason. So if, and only if, it is necessary, a trade involving Lee is tolerable.

UPDATE: 1:05 P.M: ESPN's Chris Broussard reports that even if no deal is agreed upon to send McGrady to New York, he will likely be bought out and signed by the Knicks.

UPDATE: 1:15 P.M: According to Marc Stein of ESPN, a deal has been agreed to by the Kings, Knicks, and Rockets, sending McGrady and point guard Sergio Rodriguez to the Knicks, Kevin Martin, forward Jared Jeffries, the Knicks 2012 first round pick, and the right the swap first round picks in 2011 all go to Houston, and Kings receive forwards Joey Dorsey and Carl Landry, and guard Larry Hughes.

The shedding of Jeffries and Hill means that the only players that the Knicks have under contract past this offseason are Eddy Curry, Danilo Gallinari, Toney Douglas, and Wilson Chandler. Assuming all Bird Rights and Qualifying Offers are waived on June 30th, the Knicks will have approximately $32 million in cap space this summer, which will be enough to afford two maximum contracts this offseason.

Knicks Making Moves

Thursday's 3 P.M. EST NBA trade deadline is approaching, and the Knicks look to be active.

Multiple reports (here, here, and here) have the Knicks nearing a deal with Boston shipping out Nate Robinson, with the Knicks potentially receiving Eddie House and picks. Robinson did not make the trip with Chicago with the team last night due to the "flu".

At about 2 P.M. Wednesday, Robinson ironically tweeted the Eminem lyrics, "N wen I'm gone just carry on don't mourn rejoice every time u hear da sound of my voice(word aapp)"

Energy. That's what Nate Robinson brings to his basketball team. Now when this energy runs out, he returns to being a very pedestrian, mediocre player. That's when his coach needs to realize the opposing team can gain momentum off his bad shots and turnover-prone basketball, and sub him out.

There's no question Nate can be a huge part of a winning team; but the risk of playing him 40+ minutes outweighs the reward. In most cases, Nate's spark burns out after a few possessions, and just as fast as he ignites the team, he takes them right out of the game. Which is why he can't and probably never will be able to be a starting point guard in the league. But, if used in moderation, he can be a game-changing asset on a playoff team.

Nate Robinson on top of his game, being correctly coached, and with a good surrounding cast, puts both his team and himself in a win-win situation. Nate gets his time to energize the team, and when that time runs out, he's relieved with a less explosive, but more consistent point guard-Rajon Rondo fits the bill.

But Donnie Walsh isn't finished.

The Knicks are simultaneously in conversations with the Houston Rockets regarding Tracy McGrady. McGrady has played in just 6 games this season and is receiving the "Marbury treatment" from the Rockets. Newsday's Alan Hahn has said the deal will "go down to the wire". Depending on the players departing on the New York side, the swap could presumably able the Knicks to sign two maximum contracts this upcoming offseason. Jared Jefferies, who is due to make $6.9 million next season, Larry Hughes, rookie Jordan Hill, and multiple draft picks are reportedly involved in the deal.

The main sticking point of this trade seems to be the draft picks involved. The two teams will reportedly swap first round picks in 2011, with Houston receiving the Knicks' first rounder in 2012. The protection of the picks is what is, again reportedly, holding the trade up.

UPDATE: 6:01 P.M: The Bulls are no longer in the running for McGrady and Houston has turned their full attention to Walsh and the Knicks, according to sources that have spoken with Yahoo! Sports.

UPDATE: 6:13 P.M: The Knicks have traded Center Darko Milicic, who has played in just eight games this season, to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Forward Brian Cardinal and cash. Both contracts are expiring.

UPDATE: 7:03 P.M: MSG reports that the Knicks will also receive J.R. Giddens, assuming the trade goes official. His contract expires following this season.

UPDATE: 7:44 P.M: The Knicks are interested in sending Al Harrington to Chicago, with him possibly being re-routed to a third team, ESPN's Chris Sheridan reports. Chicago has told veteran swingman John Salmons to stay home instead of accompanying the Bulls on their trip to New York Wednesday, with a trade imminent. Salmons has a player option worth $5.8 million for next season, meaning an acquisition of him by the Knicks would essentially cancel out (salary-wise) ridding themselves of Jared Jefferies.

UPDATE: 8:20 P.M. The Milicic-Cardinal deal is now official, and the Knicks will likely waive Cardinal to make room for other moves to happen, Alan Hahn reports.

UPDATE: 9:15 P.M: John Salmons has been traded from the Bulls to the Bucks for the expiring contracts of Kurt Thomas and Francisco Elson.

Houston wants both incoming draft picks to be unprotected-meaning no matter how the Knicks finish the season (playoffs, lottery, etc) Houston will receive both picks. Donnie Walsh is "hopeful" that some of not all of the Knicks' deals will get done.

UPDATE: 2:06 A.M (Story also here): To clear all the confusion: The Rockets and Kings have agreed to a trade sending Tracy McGrady, Carl Laundry and Joey Dorsey from Houston to Sacramento for Kevin Martin, Kenny Thomas, Hilton Armstrong and Sergio Rodriguez. This trade is all but official and has been acknowledged by Kevin Martin, saying ""I appreciate them letting me go to a playoff caliber team at this time of my career." All this according to Yahoo! Sports. The deal, however, may still include New York as Sacramento has not yet decided if they will keep McGrady or ship him to New York.

Time to Wake Up

When last we spoke about the New York Islanders, things couldn't have felt much better. This was less than two weeks ago. They sat just barely out of a playoff spot; it seemed to good to be true.

Well guess what, maybe it was. A mere 13 days ago, the Isles were playing inspired, energetic hockey. Over the past 2 weeks, they have dropped 5 games in a row, and they have been ugly. If they haven't been blown out, they've been plagued by a seemingly anemic offense. A hockey team playing tired is the last thing anybody wants to watch. The games have been very unexciting, which is certainly not this team's style. They seem to be playing sluggish, which is not entirely unexpected from a young team.

The Islanders need to use the upcoming Olympic Break to their advantage. They have only one Olympian on their squad, Mark Streit. The rest of the players (especially the young ones) need to take a few days off to relax, and regroup. Once it's time to get back to business, they will be ready. They have proven that they can contend with the NHL's best, and that isn't just something a team can suddenly lose. So fear not, Islanders fans. While it may seem dim at the moment, this team has showed multiple times, they can turn it around in a New York minute.

Nine years and counting..

2001. The Knicks finished the season in 4th place in the Eastern Conference. A playoff appearence. Jeff Van Gundy as head coach. The best defense in the NBA (league-best 86.1 PPG allowed). And an all-star, Latrell Sprewell. That last one, an all-star.. is something the team hasn't touched since.

This season looked to be the one to finally conclude the near decade-long drought of Eastern Conference all-star benches lacking a New York representative. David Lee, prior to the Janury 28 game vs. Toronto) has averaged 19.4 points per game, 11.4 rebounds per game, 3.4 assists per game, and is shooting with a percentage of 55.4%, all while playing as a 6 foot-9 inch center. His jumpshot now extends to about 20 feet out and for lack of a better term, is pure money. The game is seemingly just too easy for Lee this season, as he is emerging as a dominant force in the league.

Are these the qualities of an all-star? According to the NBA head coaches, no. Al Horford of the Hawks managed to squeak in as the last forward reserve in the east. Horford is averaging 13.6 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game, 2.2 assists per game, and shooting at 57%.

But the difference in votes to the trip to Dallas next month depended on one element: the standings. The Hawks sit among the elite in the east at third place, behind powerhouses Cleveland and Boston. The Knicks, however, entering Thursday's game, appear at 10th place, 4 games behind Charlotte for the eighth and final playoff seed.

David Lee is one of the finest forwards in the eastern conference, no question. His team however, doesn't particularly share that same success. This fact alone is what kept Lee from appearing in the first All-Star Game of his career, and the first for a Knick in nine.. yes.. nine years. Do the Knicks, their fans, and Lee himself have a legitimate gripe with the final selections? Sure they do. But is the reasoning that supports the voters' decisions wrong in any way? Not at all.

There is one major flaw in not only NBA all-star voting, but in other sports as well. Fans vote for all-star starters, and their (or should I say, our) vote counts 100%. The players, coaches, and the league have absolutely zero say as to who starts in the game. The result of this defect in the voting system is what we are all afraid of, and fears have turned into reality in 2010. Allen Iverson, who started the season in Memphis, played three games there, half-heartedly announced his retirement after Donnie Walsh and the Knicks didn't want to put player-development at risk for the sake of signing him, then returned to the city he called home for a decade, and is currently averaging the lowest numbers of his entire career, has not just made, but is starting the All-Star Game at the point for the East. An all-star roster spot that so many well-deserving players yearn to call theirs, is being held hostage by a 34 year-old point guard, averaging 14 and 4.

But what do I know? I'm just another fan, right? Not according to the NBA, (along with the MLB and NHL) who believes my peers and I deserve the right to determine the best players in the league.

Options are rapidly wearing thin for Omar Minaya and the Mets.

Three pitchers that the team has eyed to nab as their number two starter, have found new homes in the past week-none of which being Citi Field.

To begin the madness, on January 22, the top available free agent pitcher at the time was taken off the board, and landed not in New York, but Los Angeles. The Angels agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with Joel Pineiro. In 2009, Pineiro posted a 3.49 ERA and enjoyed a 15 win-season for the Cardinals. The Mets were reportedly in the running for him also, but came up short in negotiations. In three starts against the Mets in '09, Pineiro went 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA. The Mets as a team batted just .253 against him. Compared to the asking price, which according to some reports was 3-4 years at $15 million per, this pick-up is a steal for LA.

Today, Ben Sheets, who the Mets were also in pursuit for, signed with Oakland on a one-year, $10 million+incentives deal. Sheets missed all of the 2009 season after undergoing elbow surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon. Granted, $10 million is a lot of cash to throw at a pitcher who has been known to have injury troubles, and coming off elbow surgery; but if anybody is worth the risk, it's Sheets. With a career ERA of 3.72, Sheets is a 4-time All-Star. And prior to 2007, the highest that his team had ever finished in the NL Central standings was 3rd, finishing in last place three times. With both defensive and run support, you can expect a healthy Ben Sheets to be in Cy Young contention. But will he be able to stay on the mound? The Athletics have 10 million reasons to really, really hope so.

Later in the day, news came across the wire that starter Jon Garland, Diamondback-turned-Dodger in '09, had agreed to a one-year, $5.3 million deal with the Padres. Garland was the next-best available free agent pitcher on the market, and finished last season with a record of 11-13 and a 4.01 ERA. His record with the NL West-Champion Dodgers down the stretch was 3-2. While settling for about half of Sheets' contract value, Garland is looked at as a "sure thing" type pitcher. He's started at least 32 games each season since becoming a full-time starter in 2002, and totaling at least 191 innings in all of those years. He relished back-to-back 18 win seasons for the White Sox in 2005 and 2006, but oddly enough has never been a team's number one starter. San Diego will undoubtedly view their new acquisition as a bargain compared to the contract Sheets recieved just hours earlier.

After this reason shuffle of free agent pitchers, the Mets look at minimal options remaining in this offseason. They have been linked to 43 year-old John Smoltz, who split a mediocre season with Boston and St. Louis in '09. He looked just about finished following his short stint in Boston, but came back from the dead somewhat after signing in St. Louis. But at this point, you ask yourself, do the Mets need a 43 year-old pitcher, who is a shell of his former self, holding down the back end of their rotation? Why not bring back Pedro Martinez, if that's the path they wish to take.

Other possibilities include:

Former Met-closer Braden Looper who has since been made a starter, and has gone 38-33 with a 4.77 ERA in his three seasons as a starting pitcher. Mets fans' response to considering bringing back Looper for a second stint with the team following his putrid first go-around is a collective "You're kidding, right?"
Former Yankee Chien-Ming Wang who has enjoyed great success at the big league-level, but with major injury problems, probably won't be expected to pitch any time in the near future.
LeBron Ja... oops, wrong off-season.

The Mets are really out of options at this point. Whether it be poor management, or just looking into 2011, the book of the 2009-2010 offseason is just about closed for the New York Mets. And if looking into next offseason is the case for Omar Minaya, he probably won't be around by then.

Year One: Success

The New York Jets magical run finally came to an end. Surprising? Not necessarily. Unfortunate? Absolutely. But Jets fans, worry not. Next year is right around the corner and here are a few reasons to look forward to it.
1) Mark Sanchez- as a rookie quarterback (who could have just as easily been finishing his collegiate career at USC) his team finished just one win shy of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since January of 1969. However, the loss to the Colts was no fault of his. Throwing 2 touchdowns and only 1 interception, he went punch for punch with Peyton Manning for 3 quarters. He has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, and the Jets and their fans can certainly look forward to a bright future with number six under center.

2) Rex Ryan- In his first year at the helm of the New York Jets, Ryan proved that he could back up his confident words with remarkable success. He lead the Jets to their first AFC Championship game since 1998. His confidence was sky-high all season, and surely matched his team's on field performance. He certainly made believers of his players, and their fans, and by season's end, he had also made believers out of the rest of the league. While surely Rex was disappointed with the team's playoff loss, as any good head coach would be, he can rest assured that thanks to his personality, and reputation as a player's coach, the Jets, from this point on, will only keep getting better.

3) Defense- Without a doubt, this team's strongest asset was their defense. While they certainly disappointed in the 2nd half against Indy, (not that there's any shame in giving up yardage to Peyton Manning) they certainly did not play up to their ability. However, that does not take away from the fact that they were one of the league's most vaunted units, and led Gang Green to an improbable playoff run. And in the years that lie ahead, you can expect them to be just as great. With electrifying, hard-hitting players such as Bart Scott, Kris Jenkins, and Shaun Ellis, (not to mention a certain corner who banishes opposing receivers to his own island)the New York Jets defense is, and will continue to be, a fantastic group of players who will keep any offensive coordinator or quarterback shaking all week long.

So cheer up Jets fans. We know the season didn't end as well as hoped, but realize this team is one built for the future. They will co-open a new stadium next season, with higher expectations than ever. Worry not, the "same old Jets" mantra is a thing of the past. These new Jets' best days lie ahead.

The Kids are Back in Town

At the end of last season, the New York Islanders and their fans couldn’t have been more down on their luck. After playing out the end of another abysmal year, (finishing last in the league, in a building in desperate need of a renovation) the glory days of the 1980’s dynasty team consisting of all time greats such as Nystrom, Potvin and Billy Smith couldn’t have seemed like a more distant memory. Not only was the on-ice product an absolute joke, the front office continually made moves that puzzled the fanbase. The Nassau Coliseum was a ghost town, as it was no longer fun to watch this team that had been ravaged by injuries play out another bad season. As if this all wasn’t bad enough, rumors floated about that maybe, the team Long Islanders love could have found a new home.

However, on April 14th of 2009, the Isles finally caught a break. They won the league’s draft lottery, assuring them of the #1 pick in the upcoming draft. Unfortunately, that wasn’t nearly enough to make believers out of the fans once again. Doubters emerged immediately. Surely they couldn’t pass up the number one prospect John Tavares, the teenage sensation from Canada? But these are the Islanders, surely they’ll find a way to mess this up, right? Wrong. With no disrespect to Swedish sensation Victor Hedman or the exciting young Matt Duchene, the New York Islanders, without a doubt, drafted the class of the draft when they chose the exciting young forward out of Mississauga, Ontario. Finally, just maybe, these fans who have endured so much over the last decade may have a reason to smile. And smile they have. These young Islanders led by Coach Scott Gordon, sit in 9th place in the Eastern Conference, just a point out of a playoff spot.

Who would have thought it. A mere 7 months after the selection of Tavares, these Islanders are absolutely one of the league’s most exciting young teams. They are led by a nucleus of young players including not only the previously mentioned Tavares, but others such as Kyle Okposo, Blake Comeau, Josh Bailey and Matt Moulson. But with all the youth and excitement, someone has to be an example. The Isles seem to have just enough of a veteran presence both on the ice, and in the locker room. A team with a core of players as young as these could easily get distracted, but veterans such as Doug Weight, Trent Hunter, and Mark Streit keep this team in line. However, there was certainly one major thing troubling the minds of the Islander’s fans. Problem- solved. On Friday, January 8th, the New York Islanders welcomed back, with open arms, Rick DiPietro. The franchise goalie for the next decade-plus returned to action against the Dallas Stars for the first time in what seemed like an eternity. Although they dropped the game 4-3, what they got back was way more important than what they lost.

The Islanders are a team that demands respect, and to be honest, for the first time in a while, they deserve it. And while we are by no means comparing the Islanders to the league’s elite such as the Penguins or Capitals, this is undeniably a step in the right direction. It is once again fun to head out to the Coliseum, because win or lose, you are guaranteed to see a young team with electrifying players give it their all and leave absolutely nothing out on the ice. So who knows? This team’s future on the Island is very much still in doubt, and that arena certainly isn’t getting any younger. But for now, Islander fans, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Frustration.

For a while it seemed as if the impossible may have been brewing.The Knicks had only turned the ball over three times and held a one point lead. They had constrained Kobe Bryant to a pedestrian 14 points. Wilson Chandler had 26, David Lee had 21; all signs were pointing to yes for the Knickerbockers.

Then the fourth quarter started.

The defending champion Lakers came out for the final period firing on all cylinders. Kobe Bryant was suddenly Kobe Bryant again. Pau Gasol was getting fed down low and getting to the hole. Before long, LA found themselves on a 20-9 run and lead the Knicks 104-93. Therein lies the difference between a championship basketball team, and a lesser one.

The Knicks hung in with the Lakers basket for basket and maintained a lead of a few points occasionally. They defended Bryant to the best of their ability, which for a long time looked as if it was enough to get a victory. But suddenly the Knicks (17-25) returned to form, turning the basketball over six times in the final period, watching Kobe Bryant regain his touch while scoring 13 in those last twelve minutes, and left with a sour taste in their mouths after a 115-105 defeat. Gasol scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth, a day after Bryant called him out following their 93-87 loss to the Cavs, calling Gasol "too nice" and saying that he needs to stop thinking so much.

The Knicks, who currently are sitting at 10th place in the East, 2.5 games out of a playoff spot, have enough talent to run with the defending champs for three quarters, which is nothing to shake a finger at. David Lee finished with a season-high 31 points and 17 rebounds while earning praise from Kobe Bryant, whom he called "the best player in the world", as Bryant said after Friday night's game that Lee should be an all-star. Wilson Chandler finished the game with 28, and Danilo Gallinari with 20 - shooting 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. But the team as a whole simply didn't have enough fire-power to finish. As the deficit increased while the time on the clock decreased, the New Yorkers just couldn't body up on Gasol down low, and no matter which way you decide to defend Kobe Bryant, if he's feeling it, the ball goes in the basket. While the Knicks attempted to cut the LA lead down as time dwindled in the fourth, they did an exceptional job of getting the ball to Lee, who is sporting an array of new post moves. Chandler also managed to penetrate the Laker defense and get to the basket. But with minimal time remaining, 20 year-old Gallinari got lackadaisical spotting up for three, getting his pocket picked and putting the game on ice for the Lakers.

The Knicks are close, no question; they make you believe, that's for certain. As a fan it's hard not to look to this summer-Free Agency 2010. But realistically, will LeBron James, Amare Stoudamire, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, or Joe Johnson (to name a few), want lock up a multi-year contract with a loser? No. I do believe the Knicks can clinch a playoff berth by the end of the season. President Donnie Walsh may have to make a deal with the interest of this season in mind, however. Will he be able to take his mind off of the summer long enough to entertain this thought though? We will soon find out.

The Grass is Getting Greene-er.

A season that was all but pronounced dead.. in fact, was pronounced dead by Head Coach Rex Ryan one month ago to the day, is finally shaping up to have the Cinderella ending that not only Jets fans, but all members of the extended New York fanbase have so greatly needed to rally around.

(With the exception of the Yankees) The majority of sports enthusiasts residing in the Empire State have had to endure much more heartbreak than any fan should have to weather. In the year 2009 alone, there has been a hockey team that finished with the worst record in the NHL, a basketball team missing out on the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season, while paying their best player to stay away prior to losing him to their in-division rival, the defending Super Bowl champions' season coming to a sorry finish after their number one offensive gun (pardon the pun) was lost to the state penitentiary. Not to mention the highest paid team in the National League finishing up with their worst record since the Art Howe era.

Call me nieve, but 2010 is looking to be much more kind to us fans. Starting with the New York Metropolitans suring up a power bat for the next four seasons: far from a franchise-saving move, but one that needed to be made. There's also a newfound electricity throughout Madison Square Garden these days thanks to those ever-confusing Knicks, who earlier in the calendar year had found themselves tied for a playoff seed. The question is, is the hope that all fans now seem to sport caused by their team's on-court play, or simply anxious anticapation of what, or shall I say, who is to come this offseason?

Whatever the reason may be, there is a new, undoubted confidence that is now possesed by us hurting fans, maybe even unadmittedly. This current Jets football team could he exactly what we all need after the recent extended period of unrest. The team with personel from all parts of the neighborhood. A head coach who has never held the role before. A quarterback with all the promise in the world, but before last season, his junior year at USC, hadn't started a single game since high school. There are guys like Alan Faneca, who have tasted greatness, who have hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. There's Lito Sheppard and Thomas Jones, againg veterans who can now taste their first Super Bowl victories. Shonn Greene, Brad Smith, and injured Leon Washington, young, explosive players who play such a paramount role in the team's success. Bart Scott, who, like Coach Ryan, talks the talk but can certainly walk the walk.

This Jets team, coming off their very unsuccessful one year experiment with Brett Favre, is one win away from winning the right to play on Super Bowl Sunday. This Jets team, which very easily could've taken it easy, let their rookie quarterback sit back and learn the ropes for a season and declared a "rebuilding year", are on the verge of duplicating a run that their Giants Stadium co-tennants completed with a championship just two seasons ago. And on behalf of all fans of New York sports, thank you.
